It is possible to increase the current density by using a longitudinal magnetic field (parallel to the laser axis), which forces the ions in the plasma to move in a helical trajectory around the magnetic field lines (right hand rule). This magnetic field decreases the energy loss caused by electrons hitting the tube walls.
