Abstract:
|
This study is in the early
stages of an investigation of students' models of the structure of
matter. Initially, we will compare results for students in three
different countries. We will administer a questionnaire, developed by
Silke Melkelskis-Seifert in Germany, which includes Likert scale and
open-ended questions. This questionnaire focuses on understanding
students' models of matter at the microscopic level, such as the
existence of very small particles, particular/continuous structure of
matter, three (solid, liquid and gaseous) states and their relationship,
density of matter, etc. The survey will be administered in North
America, Europe and East Asia. Follow-up interviews will help us
understand the models underlying students' responses. |
